About the Primary
School Library
When is the Library open?
Normal hours are Mondays through Fridays
from 8am to 4pm. Please feel free to visit the library, and the librarian, Mrs.
Judi Hays and/or the assistant librarian, Mrs.
How often does
my child come to the library?
Students attend one class per week.
Individual teachers may also, at times, bring their class to the library for
special projects. Books may be returned and exchanged during library hours, as
long as there is not another class in the library.
What happens
during library time?
Students will be attending story times
with activities and book discussions, along with learning appropriate library
skills for their grade level. They will also be allowed to select and check out
books during the library period.
Is the library
computerized?
Yes, holdings are electronically
catalogued and bar-coded. Browsers are now in use in the library and in the
classrooms, so that both students and teachers may have access to the library
catalogue and search for materials by title, author, subject, keyword, or Dewey
Decimal number. You will also be able to access the catalogue at home, through
the
How many books
may my child check out and when should books be returned?
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten may
check out one book at a time, to the classroom only. In January, Kindergarten
may check out one book at a time to take home. Both Pre-First and First Grade
may check out one book at a time to take home. In January First Grade may check out two books
per week to take home. Books are
expected to be returned the following week, but we are understanding and
forgiving if there are times of occasional forgetfulness.
May parents
borrow from the library?
Yes, parents are library patrons, also,
and may check out children's materials
just as students do, but there is no quantity restriction. Books checked out by
parents may be checked out for one to three weeks. There is also a shelf in the
Primary School Library (in the 'outside room' on the book shelf next to the Faculty
Books – on the left side of the stairs) that has books of interest for parents
that may also be checked out.
Does the
library need volunteer help?
Yes, volunteers are always welcome and
needed. Please email hays@glenelg.org or stop by the library to visit with
Judi or Jo to arrange days and times for volunteering.
